How Do I Get Certified to Teach in California?

You must first determine which certification you want. If you’re going to teach elementary school, you need to get a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. You’ll need a Single Subject Teaching Credential to teach high school and an Education Specialist Instruction Credential to teach special education students.

The process is similar for all credentials, so let’s look at earning the Multiple Subject Teaching Credential.

You have several options for earning a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. The college or university route is the most straightforward. Begin by earning at least a bachelor’s degree at an accredited college or university. Then, meet the basic skills prerequisite by completing one of the following requirements:

  • Passing the CBEST
  • Passing the CSET: Multiple Subjects Plus Writing Skills Examination
  • Passing the CSU Early Assessment Program
  • Passing the CSU Placement Examinations
  • Earning a qualifying score on the ACT or SAT
  • Earning at least a three on the College Board AP English exam and the AP Calculus or Statistics exam
  • Passing another state’s basic skills exam

You also need to pass a subject-matter exam or complete an elementary subject-matter program. Then, pass the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment and take a course on the U.S. Constitution. If you don’t wish to take the course, you can pass a test instead.
You then must take a commission-approved multiple subject teacher preparation program. Upon completing the program, you need to get a recommendation from the program sponsor. The sponsor can then help you apply for the Initial Preliminary Credential through the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. You can teach with the preliminary credential for five years.

Then, you will need to complete a Teacher Induction Program and apply for the clear credential. You will need to do so through the Induction Program sponsor. You can also obtain a clear credential if you’re certified in Early Childhood/Generalist or Middle Childhood/Generalist by the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards. You will not need a sponsor if you go this route.

The process is similar for the other teacher credential programs. However, you will take different tests.

Is California Getting Rid of the CSET?

California temporarily suspended the requirements for the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET) in 2020. Legislators attempted to eliminate the CSET and other tests permanently, but the legislation did not pass. As of now, the state is not eliminating the CSET.
